Wild Things: What Does a Naturalist Do?
From identifying trees and leaves to explaining the history of the preserves, a forest preserve naturalist wears many hats and serves many needs. One of the most important things a naturalist does is connect people to nature. Naturalists serve as a resource for visitors to preserves and share information about the natural world with people.
Naturalists spend time in nature learning the natural history of an area. Many have specialized degrees in certain areas such as ornithology or botany. They also plan events and programs that further educate visitors about various aspects of the natural world.
Naturalist Abby Dean talks about what she and other District naturalists do on Wild Things on WDCB Radio (90.9 FM).
