Butterflies Of DuPage County

Forest Preserve District of DuPage County ecologists and volunteers, in collaboration with the Butterfly Monitoring Network and the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in Chicago, survey butterfly populations in over a dozen forest preserves. These efforts have produced observations of over 100 species, including several rare or habitat-dependent species, such as the bysuss skipper, pipevine swallowtail and Edward’s hairstreak.

Deer Exclosure3

Deer Management Leads To Habitat Recovery

November is breeding season for white-tailed deer. It also marks the start of the deer-management program in several forest preserves across DuPage County. Due to increased development of the county and the resulting loss of habitat, parts of the county experience unnaturally high concentrations of deer — far more individuals than the land can support while maintaining biodiversity. This has led to increases in deer-vehicle collisions, damage to private landscaping, foraging of sensitive forest preserve plant communities, and animal-to-animal contact, which dramatically increases susceptibility to disease.

Hawk Hollow Off-Leash Dog Area Opening Well Attended

Many friends — both two-legged and four-legged — joined in the Sept. 1 opening of the Hawk Hollow off-leash dog area. The new area features four separate and fully enclosed fields (one just for dogs under 25 pounds), an enclosed 1.2-mile limestone trail, and a 60-vehicle asphalt parking lot off Bittersweet Drive just south of Stearns Road. It replaces the off-leash dog area 5.4 miles away at Pratt’s Wayne Woods Forest Preserve in Wayne, which will remain open until Dec. 31, 2015. A key feature of the new facility is its rotating activity fields, which will allow the District to close off one area to give the turf a rest while keeping a second area open for use.
