Greene Farm Barn at Greene Valley
The Greene Farm barn at Greene Valley Forest Preserve in Naperville.
During the 1840s, the Greenes purchased land and built a farmstead in an area known today as Naperville. Original portions of the Greene Farm barn were constructed for dairy operations. The farm remained in the family until 1971, when William Greene conveyed the Greene family homestead to the Aurora Foundation. The foundation then sold the property to the Forest Preserve District for general purposes and cultural, educational, historical and recreational activities for the public benefit. As part of the terms of the sale, the District was to maintain the exterior homestead structures, unless they no longer served a purpose or were substantially destroyed.
In 1998, the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County passed an ordinance which authorized the District’s commitment to maintain the Greene Farm house and barn at Greene Valley Forest Preserve for the scenic pleasure of the citizens of DuPage County.
In 2008, The Board approved a consulting contract to perform a structural analysis and construction documents to stabilize the barn. At that time, cost estimates were developed indicating that an adaptive re-use of the barn would cost $4,750,000.
In 2011, the Board approved a construction contract to stabilize the barn. The stabilization project was complete in 2012.
In 2016, the District analyzed the structure’s historic significance per the District’s policy on the management of historical and cultural resources. It was determined that the building is locally significant under the National Register or associations with events that made a significant contribution to broad patterns of local history and the early development of DuPage County (Criterion A), and as a good example of mid- to late-nineteenth century wood barn (Criterion C). In July 2016 the Board approved a resolution authorizing the rehabilitation of the Greene Farm Barn to stabilize the building until future partnerships are created to fund an adaptive re-use of the structure.
The Greene Farm barn is located near the intersection of Greene and Hobson roads.
