Herrick Lake Forest Preserve Improvements
Herrick Lake Forest Preserve in Wheaton is one of the most popular preserves in DuPage County. To accommodate its visitors, the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County is working to provide better access to the preserve and improve its amenities.
Recently, the District developed a conceptual plan for Herrick Lake Forest Preserve which outlines many improvements to its western area. These include reconfiguring the preserve entrance on Herrick Road, constructing a new 149-car parking lot, reconfiguring a gravel trail that intersects the lot and constructing a new picnic shelter. The plan features an ecological approach to treating the parking lot’s future storm water runoff and calls for the preservation of high-quality trees at the site.
When complete, the area will be planted and seeded with native vegetation. In addition, a two-acre meadow adjacent to the area will be enhanced.
The improvements came about in order to provide greater access to the preserve and an improved site for picnicking.
The parking lot and other site improvements were completed in fall 2009.
The District allocated $1 million for the project and its design and construction from its yearly appropriated Capital Development funds.
