North Central DuPage Regional Trail / Woodland Hawk Update
The North Central DuPage Regional Trail is a regional bicycle trail which will connect the Elgin Branch of the Illinois Prairie Path to the Forest Preserve District of Cook County and Schaumburg Bikeway System. A proposed trail alignment to the NCDRT will run parallel to Schick Road located near Hawk Hollow Forest Preserve in Bartlett.
In April 2009, a local resident asked the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s Board of Commissioners to consider an alternate alignment to the proposed regional trail. At the Board’s direction, the Office of Planning conducted a preliminary review of the proposed trail and surrounding area and identified an alternative route through Hawk Hollow Forest Preserve and Pratt’s Wayne Woods Forest Preserve in Wayne. Known as the “Woodland Hawk Trail” by its supporters, it was to begin at Schick and Bartlett roads near Hawk Hollow and end at Granger Road near Pratt’s Wayne Woods.
In 2010, District staff conducted meetings with local government agencies and area residents to discuss the future trail development. At that time, the Wayne Township Road District notified the Forest Preserve District it had performed a feasibility and preliminary engineering study for the proposed Schick Road alignment at an earlier date. Based on the study, the Highway Commissioner suggested the Schick Road alignment would result in fewer impacts to the environment and lower estimated construction costs over the alternate trail through the forest preserves.
In February 2011, the Wayne Township Board of Trustees passed a resolution in support of the trail alignment along Schick Road.
In summer 2013, the Wayne Township Road District awarded a contract for construction of the trail segment on their property along Schick Road.
In February 2011, the District’s Board of Commissioners gave support to the Schick Road trail alignment and directed staff to assist Wayne Township in completing its section of the NCDRT.
The Wayne Township Road District completed the trail in 2013.
