Waterfall Glen: Aerial Treatment of Invasive Vegetation

Overview
Thick patches of invasive common reed have been growing in large quantities along the Des Plaines River at Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve in Darien. This invasive species, also called phragmites, is jeopardizing critical habitat for several rare species by consuming growing space. The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County will treat these populations the week of Aug. 19 if weather conditions are favorable with aquatic-approved herbicide using targeted ATV and helicopter application. Follow-up herbicide treatments will be conducted in future years as needed. Maintenance of these areas will occur for several seasons to sustain control of invasive species.

Treatments will be adjacent to the Centennial Trail. The trail and model-aircraft field will be closed on the day of the treatment.
