Top 5 Things to Do in the Preserves This Week July 14, 2017

1. Go bass fishing. Try some of the most effective lures on the market on one of the county’s best bass lakes at Fishing: For Bass on Sunday, July 16 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Meacham Grove in Bloomingdale. The free program is for ages 12 and up; under 16 with an adult. Register online or at 630-933-7248.

2. Take a wagon ride. Learn about the buildings, natural areas and equestrian roots of St. James Farm on a 30-minute Tractor-Drawn Wagon Ride on Sunday, July 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. James Farm in Warrenville. The covered-wagon rides begin at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. and are for all ages; under 13 with an adult. Rides cost $5 per person ages 5 and up; under 5 are free. Register online or at 630-580-7025. Rides will also be offered on Wednesday, July 19, Friday, July 21 and Sunday, July 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

3. Aim for fun. Young archers, improve your skills through in-depth instruction and games at Archery: Junior Achievement Series, which begins on Tuesday, July 18 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Churchill Woods in Glen Ellyn. The series runs for three Tuesdays and costs $35 per person. It is for ages 9 ‒ 17. Register online or at 630-933-7248.

4. Go on a ranger trek. Learn about the critters that live in the preserves as you explore different habitats on a guided Ranger Trek Jr. on Wednesday, July 19 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Waterfall Glen in Darien. The free program is for ages 10 and under with an adult. Register online or at 630-933-7248.

5. Let your sprout explore butterflies. Ignite your toddler’s sense of wonder for the natural world as you enjoy stories, songs, movement and guided outdoor explorations together at Little Sprouts Tales and Trails: Butterflies on Wednesday, July 19 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Fullersburg Woods in Oak Brook. The program costs $5 per child and is for ages 2 ‒ 5 with an adult. Register online or at 630-850-8110. Additional Little Sprouts programs are scheduled for Aug. 16 (birds) and Sept. 20 (animals).
