Top 5 Things to Do in the Preserves This Week June 16, 2017

Last chance to be part of the Great American Campout! June 19 is the deadline to register for the Great American Campout on June 24 ‒ 25 at Greene Valley Forest Preserve in Naperville. Bring the family and enjoy a night under the stars and a rare opportunity to camp at Greene Valley. The campout runs from 1 p.m. Saturday, June 24, to 11 a.m. Sunday, June 25, and costs $15 per person. It’s an all-ages program, but children under 18 must be accompanied by adult. Register by June 19 online or at 630-850-8110. Participants should bring their own tents and camping gear.

Top 5 things to do in the preserves this week June 16, 2017

1. Trek Sawmill Creek. Hike with a ranger and discover what lurks in and around Sawmill Creek at Trek Sawmill Creek on Saturday, June 17 from 9 a.m. to noon at Waterfall Glen in Darien. The free program is for ages 6 and up (under 16 with an adult). Register online or at 630-933-7248.

2. Discover nature through your senses. Celebrate the upcoming summer solstice while you sharpen your sensory and observational skills at a Sensory Discovery Walk on Saturday, June 17 from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. James Farm in Warrenville. The program costs $5 and is for ages 5 and up (under 13 with an adult). Register online or at 630-580-7025.

3. Take Dad on an outdoor adventure. Take Dad on an adventure with a nature scavenger hunt, s’mores, lemonade, songs and a craft at Dad and Me and the Great Outdoors on Saturday, June 17 from 2 to 4 p.m. at St. James Farm in Warrenville. The program costs $5 per child and is for ages 5 ‒ 12 with an adult. Register online or at 630-580-7025.

4. Go fishing with Dad. Hey, kids, enjoy a morning by the lake with Dad as you learn about different kinds of fish and how to catch them at Fishing: With Dad on Sunday, June 18 from 10 a.m. to noon at Hidden Lake in Downers Grove. The free program is for ages 6 ‒ 15 with an adult. Register online or at 630-933-7248.

5. Take a magical history tour. Bring your bike and join a ranger on a 10-mile historical tour at Ride the Trails History Tour on Thursday, June 22 from 9 a.m. to noon at Waterfall Glen in Darien. The program costs $6 per person in advance or $8 at the ride and is for ages 18 and up. Register online or at 630-933-7248.
