Top 5 Things to Do in the Preserves This Week May 19, 2017

1. Paddle with a ranger. Take a guided paddle through a forest preserve at Paddle with a Ranger on Saturday, May 20 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Fullersburg Woods in Oak Brook. Bring your own canoe or kayak to this free program or rent a kayak for $20 per person. The program is for ages 14 and up; under 18 with an adult. Register online or at 630-933-7248. 

2. Celebrate Turtle Day. Celebrate World Turtle Day by meeting turtles that live in DuPage County at Turtle Day on Sunday, May 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Willowbrook Wildlife Center in Glen Ellyn. Enjoy fun, educational activities at this free all-ages program. Registration is not required. Questions? Call 630-942-6200.

3. Get fit in nature. Enjoy the wonders of the preserves mornings or evenings with a ranger and naturalist and get some healthy exercise on a brisk Forest Fitness Walk on Monday, May 22 from 8:30 to 1:30 a.m. at Blackwell Forest Preserve in Warrenville or Wednesday, May 24, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at West DuPage Woods in West Chicago. Each program costs $4 in advance or $6 at the walk. Register online or at 630-850-8110.

4. Explore nature through wayfinding. Discover how to mark waypoints, measure distances, follow routes and check elevations at Navigation: GPS 101 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Waterfall Glen in Darien. The program costs $5 per person and is for ages 8 and up; under 16 with an adult. Register online or at 630-933-7248.

5. Catch the spring bird migration. Join these naturalist-led walks to see how the diversity of birds changes throughout spring at Fullersbird Friday from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Friday, May 26 at Springbrook Prairie in Naperville or Friday, June 23 at Pratt’s Wayne Woods in Wayne. The program is for ages 16 and up and costs $4 per person in advance or $6 at the walk. Register online or at 630-850-8110.

Give back to Mother Earth by helping at one of these upcoming Volunteer Restoration Workdays. Help remove nonnative plants or spread seeds.
