Top 5 Things to Do in the Preserves This Week Oct. 6, 2017

1. Buy tickets for Halloween Night Walks. Get tickets to our hugely popular Halloween Night Walks on Saturday, Oct. 7 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Fullersburg Woods Nature Education Center in Oak Brook. Tickets are $12 per person with a 10-ticket maximum per order. The 75-minute family-friendly walks will take place at Fullersburg Woods on Oct. 27 and 28 from 6 to 9 p.m. Questions? 2. Saddle up for fun. Join a celebration of the horse and fall season at Danada Fall Festival on Sunday, Oct. 8 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Danada Equestrian Center in Wheaton. Main-arena events include a demonstration of Arabian horse versatility, a parade of breeds, horse-jumping demonstrations, and horsemanship basics. Midwest Renegades will entertain with vaulting and trick riding, and the Northern Illinois Outlaws will demonstrate cowboy mounted shooting. Admission and parking are free. 3. Get fit in nature. Enjoy the wonders of the preserves with a ranger and naturalist and get some healthy exercise on a brisk Forest Fitness Walk on Monday, Oct. 9 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Fullersburg Woods in Oak Brook. The walks are part of our ongoing Forest Fitness Walk series, which is designed to encourage exercise in nature. Did you know that walking on a trail for 30 minutes burns 102 calories? Each walk costs $4 in advance or $6 at the walk. Register online or at 630-850-8110.

4. Go on an adventure with a ranger. Hey kids, find out what it takes to be a ranger as you try archery, go on a guided hike and enjoy other outdoor fun while learning about plants and animals at Ranger Adventure Day on Monday, Oct. 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Herrick Lake in Wheaton. The program costs $60 per person and is for ages 9 – 12. Register online or at 630-933-7248.

5. Delight in fall colors on a wagon ride.
Take in the fall colors on a 30-minute Fall Colors Wagon Tour on Oct. 9, 11 and 15 at 1 and 2 p.m. at St. James Farm in Warrenville. Hear about the buildings, natural areas and equestrian roots of this preserve along the way. The rides are for all ages, but kids under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Cost is $5 per person for ages 5 and up; under 5 are free. Register online or at 630-580-7025.
