Top 5 Things to Do in the Preserves This Week Sept. 22, 2017

1. Catch the sunrise on a hill. Learn about the wildlife, plants, history and forest preserve features on the hill at sunrise on a Sunrise Hike on Saturday, Sept. 23 from 6:15 to 7:15 a.m. at Meacham Grove in Bloomingdale. The free walk is for ages 8 and up (under 18 with an adult). Register online or at 630-933-7248.

2. Discover the fun of wayfinding. Learn how to mark waypoints, measure distances, follow routes and check elevations at Navigation: GPS 101 on Sunday, Sept. 24 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Meacham Grove in Bloomingdale. The program costs $5 per person and is for ages 8 and up (under 16 with an adult). Register online or at 630-933-7248.

3. Get fit in nature. Enjoy the wonders of the preserves and get some healthy exercise on a brisk Forest Fitness Walk on Monday, Sept. 25 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Meacham Grove in Bloomingdale, or on Wednesday, Sept. 27, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Greene Valley in Naperville. The walks are part of our ongoing Forest Fitness Walk series, which is designed to encourage exercise in nature. Did you know that walking on a trail for 30 minutes burns 102 calories? Each walk costs $4 in advance or $6 at the walk. Register online or at 630-850-8110.

4. Be a wilderness survivor. Learn the essentials as you build an emergency shelter and fire and perform other vital survival skills at Wilderness Survival on Monday, Sept. 25 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Herrick Lake in Wheaton. The program costs $5 per person and is for ages 7 and up (under 18 with an adult). Register online or at 630-933-7248.

5. Experience the fall bird migration. Join a naturalist-led walk to see how the diversity of birds changes from summer to fall at Fullersbird Friday on Friday, Sept. 29 from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Willowbrook Wildlife Center in Glen Ellyn. The program costs $4 in advance or $6 at the walk and is for ages 16 and up. Register online or call 630-850-8110.
