Establishing Our Roots

Community Services & Education’s Chris Gingrich and Brian Failing presented some of their historical research completed for the agency’s centennial. The two introduced information about how early conservation organizations helped to shape the creation of DuPage County’s forest preserve district in 1915. They also discussed key figures in the parks, conservation and landscape-architecture movements — including Jens Jensen and Chance Hill — and their influence on the early forest preserves.

Gingrich and Failing also shared photographs of the Prairie Club of Chicago’s members touring farmland and natural areas in the early 20th century; these areas not only offered places for recreation but also leisure and were to become some of the first DuPage forest preserves.
