Love Nature? We Do, Too
Love nature? We do, too.
At the Forest Preserve District, our mission mandates our care of the natural areas entrusted to us. We strive to create green spaces that not only restore natural functions to prairies, woodlands and wetlands but also contain a great diversity of plants and animals. Many of these areas and plant and animal communities are healthy only after years of restoration and careful management.
Although we don’t prohibit smoking in our forest preserves or golf courses, we do believe that tobacco-related products pollute the environment and harm wildlife.
Cigarette butts and tobacco filters
- contain arsenic, nicotine, lead and pesticides.
- harm wild animals that mistake them for food.
- pollute lakes, rivers and the land.
- spoil the natural beauty of our forest preserves.
- are the number one littered item in the United States.
Please put out your cigarette to protect our natural areas, plants and animals. Help make the forest preserves the cleanest, freshest places to enjoy nature and the wildlife that thrives there.
Keep an eye out for special messages at forest preserve information kiosks and upcoming events, and visit Keep America Beautiful for more facts about cigarette litter.
