GRIT Freedom Wheelchair

The GRIT Freedom Chair is intended for individuals who seek independent mobility over rough terrain, such as grass, gravel, small rocks, and inclines that may be impassable with standard wheelchair casters and tires. Chair has a 20-inch seat width and supports up to 300 pounds.

Hand Positioning

Use hands higher on the lever bars to get more torque and make it easier to climb inclines and get over obstacles. This is recommended on inclines and while navigating over obstacles, such as roots, rocks, and potholes.

Use hands lower on lever bars to get more distance out of each push and go faster but with less torque. This is recommended on flat ground.

Front Wheel

The extended, over-sized front wheel allows users to navigate over obstacles without getting stuck, like typical wheelchair casters would. The design also helps as a shock absorber. Inflate tires to higher end of range listed on tire.

Safety

Always use seatbelt. Although the Freedom chair is designed to navigate obstacles, it is possible to tip if navigating obstacles that are too large or going up inclines that are too steep. Always use with caution. Footrest is adjustable by quick release. Please ensure quick release is securely fastened to avoid movement of plate during use. Always wear closed-toe shoes while using the chair. It is recommended to use the foot strap. However, if not using the foot strap, please make sure it is secured and not dragging while chair is in use.

Brakes

Pull back hard on lever bars to brake while in motion. Can be used independently to turn sharply or together to fully stop.

Parking brakes are black levers located at the front of each wheel. Pull up and back hard to engage each brake against each tire. Push down and out to disengage parking brakes.

Backward Movement

The GRIT wheelchair is designed to prevent the user from rolling backwards when on an incline. To move backward, remove lever bars to allow wheels to roll backward. Lever bars can be stored horizontally, fitting in slot at the rear of the seat on each side.

Transferring

Forest Preserve District staff can hold the chair for stability but are not able to directly assist with lifts or transfers. If you require assistance transferring, please bring a companion to assist.
