The Application Process

Submit your application through our volunteer portal.
2. Application review (within 2 weeks)
Volunteer Services reviews your application and connects you with program staff.
3. Interview (3 – 4 weeks)
Phone or in-person conversation with program staff to explore fit.
4. Placement decision (3 – 4 weeks)
Volunteer Services confirms your placement or suggests other options.
5. Screening (within 1 week)
Applicants 16+ complete a background check and provide references.
6. Orientation (within 2 months)
Attend new volunteer orientation, held monthly at District headquarters (second Wednesday evening).
7. Training & shifts
Begin program-specific training and start your volunteer role.

To become a long-term volunteer, you’ll go through our onboarding process, which typically takes 2–3 months. Here’s what to expect:

It depends on the program.
- One-time community events: Ages 8+ with an adult.
- Long-term individual roles: Generally ages 18+ with limited opportunities for 13 – 17.
- Long-term family roles: Ages 10+ with an adult.
No prior experience is needed. All volunteers attend new volunteer orientation and receive the training needed for their role.
All long-term volunteers must wear a volunteer shirt, volunteer photo ID, long or short pants, and closed-toe shoes. Dress for the weather. Some roles require district-provided historical attire.
Yes, for school, church, or other organizations. You’re responsible for tracking your hours and obtaining signatures each time you volunteer. One-time volunteer opportunities are listed in our calendar of events.
No. We do not offer opportunities to fulfill court-ordered community service.

For one-time volunteer activities open to the public, often yes. Everyone must register individually.
