The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County is inviting visitors to unplug from digital distractions, reconnect with nature, and share the moments that inspire them through its 2026 photo contest.

Part of the Forest Preserve District’s “Unplug to Recharge” campaign, the photo contest encourages people to spend less time looking at screens and more time looking at the world around them. Whether using a camera or smartphone, participants are encouraged to spend most of their time enjoying the outdoors and just a few moments capturing the memories they’ll want to revisit after their adventures end.

“The best photographs begin with paying attention,” said Forest Preserve District President Daniel Hebreard. “We hope this contest inspires people to slow down, explore our forest preserves, and capture the moments that make every visit memorable.”

Entries will be accepted through Sept. 7 in the following juried categories:

• Wildlife & Plants

• People & Recreation

• Landscapes & Places

Photos must be taken within the DuPage County forest preserves. There is no limit to the number of entries, and the same photo may be entered into multiple categories.

A panel of Forest Preserve District employees will select one winner in each category. Winners may choose one prize package with an approximate retail value of $150 featuring camera equipment, technology, or a framed print.

In addition to the juried awards, visitors may vote online for their favorite photograph. The Voters’ Choice winner will receive a Kodak Printomatic camera, carrying case, and 20-pack of Zink paper, valued at approximately $85.

The contest also includes three random prize drawings. The first occurred on July 1, with additional drawings on Aug. 5 and Sept. 2. Each winner will receive a Kodak disposable camera and a $25 Forest Preserve District gift card. Gift cards may be redeemed for programs, permits, equipment rentals, or Forest Preserve District merchandise.
