Jeepers Creepers! DuPage County's Forest Preserves Go All Out for Halloween

From family-friendly pumpkin hikes to gothic ghost stories for grown-ups, the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County has a frightfully fun Halloween lineup this October.

Pumpkin Night Hike for Families
On Oct. 17 and 18, bring the family to Fullersburg Woods Forest Preserve in Oak Brook between 5:30 and 9 p.m. for a self-guided pumpkin- and lantern-lit hike through the woods. Kids can use their sleuthing skills on a Halloween-themed scavenger hunt and then collect a treat when they’re done. Hikes leave every 15 minutes; the last group leaves at 7:30 p.m., and trails close at 9 p.m. This all-ages hike (under 18 with an adult) is $10 per person for ages 3 and up and free for ages 2 and under. Lantern-Lit Halloween Hike
On Oct. 24 and 25, take a self-guided hike on a 2-mile lantern-lit trail at St. James Farm in Warrenville from 6 to 9 p.m. The hike starts with a ghost story and ends around a cozy fire. Hikes leave every 15 minutes; the last group leaves at 7:30 p.m., and trails close at 9 p.m. This all-ages hike (under 18 with an adult) is $10 per person. Register online or 630-933-7248.

Lanterns and Legends: A Historic Jack-O’-Lantern Event
Visit the Graue Mill and Museum in Oak Brook on Oct. 25 and 26 between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. to carve a pumpkin and craft a candle while hearing the legend of this spooky Halloween tradition. Supplies are provided. (Family-friendly stories are between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.; stories for ages 10 and up are 2 p.m. and later.) This all-ages event (under 18 with an adult) is $15 per pumpkin. Mayslake by Moonlight Mansion Tour
On Oct. 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 7 to 8 p.m., history and mystery collide to create a thrilling mix of beauty and suspense — with a touch of the supernatural — at Mayslake Peabody Estate in Oak Brook. Explore the shadowy corridors of Mayslake Hall as you hear thrilling urban legends, tales of hauntings, and stories of mischief. The tour is for ages 12 and up (under 18 with an adult) and is $15 per person. Register online or at 630-206-9566.

Horsin’ Around Day: Trick-or-Treat at Danada
Trick-or-treat with the horses at the Danada Equestrian Center in Wheaton on Oct. 25 from noon to 4 p.m. Horses in the barn will be handing out candy and dressed to impress! Vote for the one with the best costume, and then take a tractor-drawn wagon ride through the fall forest preserve. Admission is free for this all-ages program. Wagon rides (ages 13 and under with an adult) are $5 per person ages 5 and up and free for kids under 5. Registration isn’t required, but if you have questions, call 630-668-6012.

Gothic Ghost Stories
Adult fans of spooky tales, step into a shadowy world of mystery and terror at Mayslake Peabody Estate in Oak Brook on Oct. 2, 9 and 23 from 7 to 8 p.m. Stories will take you on a journey of vengeful spirits, tragic souls, and haunted landscapes with chills that will haunt long after the final tale is told! This 18-and-up program is $5 per person. Register online or at 630-206-9566.
