Our Volunteer Program
Our Forest Preserve District’s volunteer program is designed to engage volunteers who are willing to donate their time, talents, and resources to support staff and programs in carrying out the mission, purpose, and guiding principles. The volunteer program offers opportunities to assist and support staff across many diverse programs.

Volunteer at Fullersburg Woods
Fullersburg Woods’ volunteers assist staff by helping with nature programs, hands-on learning activities, and seasonal happenings. They also care for animals, tend the gardens, or conduct research.
The nature education center is located at Fullerburg Woods Forest Preserve in Oak Brook.
Volunteer Positions
Commitment: Weekly (2 – 4 hours/week)
Minimum Age: 16
Application Deadline: November – March
Distinguishing Features of the Position:
Assist staff in the care, feeding and safekeeping of a variety of native wildlife at the Fullersburg Woods Nature Education Center. Duties may vary at the discretion of District staff. The volunteer will interact with the public and respond to questions and requests for information. Direction and training is provided by staff.
Commitment: Seasonal (6 months, 2 hours/week)
Minimum Age: 16
Application Deadline: November – March
Distinguishing Features of the Position:
Assist staff in caring for the gardens on site while providing a safe, informative and enjoyable experience for visitors. Duties may vary at the discretion of District staff. The volunteer will sometimes interact with the public and respond to questions and requests for information. Direction and training is received from staff.
Commitment: Flexible (Over 4 hours/month)
Minimum Age: 18
Application Deadline: November – March
Distinguishing Features of the Position:
Assist staff in researching information related to the site and presenting this information at meetings for discussion and validation. Duties may vary at the discretion of District staff. The volunteer may occasionally interact with the public and respond to questions and requests for information. Direction and training is received from staff.
Commitment: Flexible (12 hours/year)
Minimum Age: 18
Application Deadline: November – March
Distinguishing Features of the Position:
Assist staff in promoting and presenting cultural or natural resource interpretive/educational programs for the public at Fullersburg Woods Nature Education Center and public facilities. Duties may vary at the discretion of District staff. The volunteer will interact with the public and respond to questions and requests for information. Direction and training is received from staff.
Commitment: Monthly (4 hours/year)
Minimum Age: 18
Application Deadline: November – March
Distinguishing Features of the Position:
Assist staff in promoting and presenting cultural or natural resource interpretive/educational programs for the public at Fullersburg Woods Nature Education Center and public facilities. Duties may vary at the discretion of District staff. The volunteer will interact with the public and respond to questions and requests for information. Direction and training is received from staff.
