Greene Valley Recreational Improvements

Project Overview

In 2023 the Forest Preserve District adopted a new master plan for Greene Valley Forest Preserve. The plan identifies several opportunities for improved public safety, operational efficiencies, and recreational amenities on the north side of the preserve, which already features a popular off-leash dog area, reservable picnic shelters, and a trailhead.

The project will remove the existing latrines and replace them with modern flush washrooms. It will also replace the west picnic shelter with a new structure with barbecue grills north of the existing east shelter. These measures will allow the District to not only improve recreational features but also consolidate amenities, reduce mowing, and enhance natural areas.

New asphalt trails will connect the parking lot to the shelters and the existing regional trail. Another trail will lead to a new kayak and canoe launch along the East Branch DuPage River. Near the historic Greene Farm barn, a new shaded seating area will provide the perfect spot for gatherings or quiet conversations among small groups.

One key aspect of the project will be a relocated entrance to this well-visited area, a move supported by a traffic study that evaluated access, circulation, and safety issues related to this section of the preserve. The new location will reduce conflicts by shifting traffic away from the off-leash dog area and will address design deficiencies with the existing entrance.
