Mayslake Improvements

Project History
In November 2006, the Forest Preserve District’s Board of Commissioners approved a master plan for Mayslake Peabody Estate. The plan details restoration opportunities for Mayslake Hall and the establishment of a learning institute to provide a site for educational and cultural programming, professional development, and corporate retreats, meetings and special events. The Forest Preserve District is working to restore Mayslake Hall, now a registered national historic landmark and establish it as a cultural and educational center. The hall currently serves as a venue for architectural tours, lectures and artistic performances throughout the year.

Today, the District is raising funds from individual and corporate benefactors to continue the restoration, preservation and operation of Mayslake Peabody Estate.

Project Overview
While some improvements have been made to portions of the interior of Mayslake Hall, the exterior is also in need of attention. The south courtyard elevations were selected to be first section of exterior restoration at the Hall.The masonry will be properly cleaned and tuckpointed, the rotting half-timbers will be restored or replaced, and the stucco finish will be replaced. In addition, the original windows at the second story will be restored to original finishes and the original hardware will be refinished or replaced where necessary. Various other carpentry pieces, including the hand-carved bargeboards on the gable roof section, will be restored or replaced to match the 1920s conditions.The masonry at the chimney, including the terra cotta pots at the top, will also be cleaned and tuckpointed as part of this project.

In recent years, the limestone lintels around the breakfast porch on the south side of the Hall were found to be failing due to deteriorating steel supports. Therefore, the lintels and support will be replaced with the project. At the same time, the brick and limestone masonry will be cleaned and tuckpointed on all three elevations around the porch. Some minor roofing repairs will also be made with the lintel repairs.

Project Funding
Approximately $720,000 has been budgeted in Construction & Development funds and General Obligation Bond funds, which shall cover all design, permitting and construction costs for this project.

Current Status
The Contract was awarded in July 2015 and construction is expected to occur August through November 2015.
