Willowbrook Wildlife Center Treating Injured Bald Eagle Found Along Interstate 55

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s Willowbrook Wildlife Center is treating an injured American bald eagle that a state road crew found along Interstate 55 near Cass Avenue in Darien Tuesday morning.

The eagle, believed to be a male between 4 and 5 years old, suffered head trauma and abrasions and contusions to its wings, possibly from being struck by a vehicle, according to Willowbrook Manager Sandy Fejt.

A cursory exam of the eagle Tuesday revealed no obvious broken bones and its body was in good condition, Fejt said. The bird was given medication and being kept in isolation overnight to let it de-stress and recuperate from the trauma, she said.

“The more serious injuries have been ruled out, but we don’t know what’s going on internally,” Fejt said.

It is critical to provide the bird with a quiet environment during this time to prevent further undue stress, Fejt said. Its condition will be closely monitored over the next 24 to 48 hours, and a more thorough examination including X-rays will be done once it settles down a bit, she said.

The bird had a metal band on it from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, indicating it has had human contact before and there should be some records on its history.

An Illinois Department of Transportation crew spotted the eagle Tuesday morning sitting on the side of the road along the ramp from inbound I-55 to southbound Cass Avenue, according to WLS-TV. The crew parked along the ramp to protect the bird from traffic while waiting for help. Staff from the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County and DuPage County Animal Care and Control responded to the scene, got the bird into a cage and brought it to Willowbrook.

The only publicly funded wildlife rehabilitation facility in DuPage County and one of the few in northeastern Illinois equipped to treat native and migratory birds, Willowbrook treats more than 8,700 birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians each year.
