The Forest Preserve District offers a range of programs for schools, including field trips, self-guided programs, in-class presentations and learning opportunities at Fullersburg Woods Nature Education Center, Kline Creek Farm and Willowbrook Wildlife CenterWe also offer a variety of professional development and extension programs.

Barn Building
Have Kline Creek Farm bring this farming experience to your classroom! Introduce your students to architecture by showing them the tools and techniques of timber-frame construction. Participants will learn the history of barn building and build a scaled timber-frame barn. To register, call 630-876-5900.

Bass in the Class

A mandatory training for teachers who are new to "Bass in the Class" and want to join next year's program. Liven up your science curriculum with this hands-on aquatic biology program that will have your students raising fingerling bass in the classroom. Our naturalists will guide you through this exciting eight-week program, which culminates with a forest preserve release event. Ages 18 and up. Free. To register, call 630-850-8112

Building an 1890s Farm
Have Kline Creek Farm bring this farming experience to your classroom! A costumed interpreter will lead a series of activities that will help students compare their lives to life in DuPage 125 years ago. Your students will saw wood, make rope, churn butter and build a tabletop model post-and-beam barn. $50 per program. To register, call 630-876-5900.

Christmas on the Farm

This three-part program for schools and home-schoolers includes a visit to the 1890s farmhouse kitchen to experience the sights, smells and tastes of holiday cookies baking in wood-burning oven. Students tour the farmhouse and learn about holiday traditions, focusing on the Christmas tree and gifts. A self-guided tour of the farm helps them discover how shorter, cold winter days affected life from transportation to animal care. 60 minutes. To register, call 630-876-5900.

Discovery Tour 

During this self-guided group tour, children use magnifying lenses and spyglasses to explore the farm while leaders guide them with a picture booklet. One hour. Thursday – Monday. Grades Pre-K – 1. Free. To register, call 630-876-5900.

Evolution of Agriculture

Investigate and discuss crucial changes in farming technology over the past 125 years including transportation, expanding markets, the development of agri-business, and modern issues such as genetic engineering, feed additives, consumer safety, and environmental effects. 90 minutes. Farm Tour

Students discover how members of a farm family worked together as they tour the farmhouse, barn, and other buildings and interact with livestock. Seasonally content helps students understand how work related to the time of the year in terms of crop and animal life cycle. 90 minutes. Grades 2 - 8. $2 per student. Food-Chain Challenge

Students learn how ecosystems function through scientific experiments and real-life examples, including an activity that places them in a forest preserve food chain. 90 minutes. Tuesdays and Fridays at 9:30 and 10 a.m. Grades 1 – 5. $60 per student. To register, call 630-850-8110.

Geocaching Adventure

On this high-tech outdoor treasure hunt, students learn about satellites and the science of GPS as they hone their team-building skills. 90 minutes. Tuesdays and Fridays at 9:30, 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. and noon. Grades 4 – 12. $60 per program. To register, call 630-850-8110.

Get Outside! Outdoor Education Day

Students spend a full day outdoors learning about topics from environmental science to recreation with activities focusing on tree and plant identification, birds and team building. Grades 1 – 8. $10 per student. To register, call 630-850-8110.

Get Sticky! Maple Syrup Program

Students learn about tree identification, plant physiology and the art of sap collecting and see maple syrup made from start to finish. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Ages Pre-K – 8. Free. $5 per person (including chaperones). To register, call 630-850-8110.

My First Visit to the Farm

A costume guide introduces students to this 1890s farm and the people who care for it. Students discover what makes farm animals different from wild animals and the purposes animals serve on a farm. Nature Hike
Students use their senses to observe and record their surroundings during a hike with a naturalist through an oak-hickory forest before joining an activity and Q-and-A time at the visitor center. 90 minutes. Operation Restoration
Get your students to think globally and act locally as they learn about biodiversity and participate in a restoration-focused work session that demonstrates how groups can make a big difference in a short amount of time. 90 minutes. Plant Power

Students discover the science of trees and other plants as they hike with a forestry scientist, "build a tree" from the inside out, and learn about seed dispersal, photosynthesis, physiology and identification. 90 minutes. Self-Guided Tour of Willowbrook

Enjoy a brief introduction to the center by one its naturalists, and then tour the center on your own. 45 – 60 minutes. Grades Pre-K – 12. $1 per student. To register, call 630-942-6200 at least four weeks in advance.

Stream Monitoring

Students discover insects and other macroinvertebrates with varying degrees of tolerance to pollution as they learn how to measure water quality and gain real-life ecological experiences. How do I register for a program?
Complete and submit the program form on this page and provide registration information, preferred date and time, and other details.

Is there somewhere we can picnic before or after our program?
DuPage County forest preserves have open grassy picnic areas with tables at no extra cost, and some offer shelters on a first-come, first-served basis. A few shelters can be reserved in advance for a fee either online 24/7 or through Visitor Services weekdays at 630-933-7248.

What if we have accessibility concerns?
