Blackwell Kayak Launch Improvements

Planning Project

Project Description

District staff has identified a need for ADA-accessible access for kayaks and canoes on lakes at DuPage forest preserves, especially at Blackwell and Herrick Lake forest preserves where we have rentals and frequent events.

Planning staff developed improvement plans to install a kayak launch at Silver Lake at Blackwell Forest Preserve, meeting ADA requirements for recreational boating facilities. The proposed dock will allow individuals of all ages and abilities to launch a kayak without assistance, and includes a boat slip surrounded on three sides and a transfer platform with handrails. It will be the District’s first permanent accessible kayak launch. The Friends of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County have identified this as a priority project.

Bids were solicited for the project in spring 2021, and construction is expected to begin summer 2021 and to be completed by the end of 2021.

The $75,650 project will be funded in part by $15,000 in private donations through the Friends of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County. The remainder will be funded through the Forest Preserve District’s yearly appropriated construction and development funds.
