Forest Preserve District burn crews set fire to prairie, wetland and woodland communities at select sites throughout the DuPage forest preserves. Prescribed burns — a natural-resource management tool — restore many functions to the county's ecosystems. Burns eliminate or stunt nonnative woody and shrubby vegetation, open communities to sunlight for nourishment, enhance water filtration, break down organic materials and enrich soils.
